A common trap

Wrong Entrando nella stanza, la lampada era accesa.

Right Quando sono entrato nella stanza, la lampada era accesa.

This is the dangling participle, and English has exactly the same fault with exactly the same shape: « entering the room, the lamp was on » says the lamp came in. The difference is how much it costs. English readers wince and read on; Italian does not let it pass at all, and the sentence has to be rebuilt with a proper clause. Pronouns also attach at the back: parlandogli, never gli parlando.

The gerund: parlando
