The list for the conversation after the argument. Near the end of it is vexé, and the English lookalike is a whole register off. Elle est restée vexée says she was hurt in her pride: slighted, offended, stung — the wound is to her standing, and it is a feeling somebody nurses rather than shows. English « vexed » is milder and more outward: irritated, put out, mildly cross. And in its commonest surviving use it is not about a person at all — « a vexed question » is one that has been argued over for years. So the English word underplays what the French one says. The English for vexé is « offended », « hurt » or « put out »; and if somebody tells you il est vexé, they are not reporting irritation, they are warning you that an apology is owed.
