Ninth on this list sits le rebut, and it is the entry an English reader is most likely to carry off into a courtroom. The two words really are related. « Rebut » came into English from Anglo-Norman rebuter, and the French noun comes from the same verb, which meant to push a thing back: re- plus bouter, to thrust. From there the languages walked in opposite directions. French kept the object. What has been pushed back is what nobody will take, so le rebut is the scrap bin of a workshop, mettre au rebut is to scrap something, and le taux de rebut, further down this page, is the scrap rate. The verb also kept the feeling of being pushed away: ce travail me rebute means the job puts me off. English narrowed the word to arguments instead. « To rebut » is to answer a claim with contrary evidence, a presumption is « rebuttable », and what a lawyer hands up is « a rebuttal » — there is no English noun « a rebut » at all. So pièce rebutée on a report is not disagreeing with anyone. The part went in the bin.
