One verb instead of a clause
Forty-five verbs that say in a word what otherwise takes a sentence.
The third entry is arguer, and it is the one verb here an English reader will feel sure of and be wrong about. « To argue » does two jobs at once: quarrelling, as in « they argued all evening », and maintaining a position, as in « she argued that the clause was void ». Arguer does neither in the ordinary way. It belongs to written and legal French, it takes de, and it means to put a fact forward as the ground of a claim: il argue de son ancienneté, he rests his case on his years of service. Nobody has fallen out with anybody. For the quarrel French says se disputer; for holding a position it says soutenir or faire valoir; and argumenter is laying out the reasoning itself, which is a third thing again. One warning for the ear, since the spelling hides it: the u of arguer is sounded, unlike the silent one in guerre. Write il a argué about an evening row and the row turns into a pleading.
