Fifth on the list is le point de rupture, the width at which a layout gives way and the menu folds itself up — what English calls a breakpoint. The noun inside it is the trap. La rupture is an ordinary French word, used all day and about small things: être en rupture de stock is simply to be out of stock, la rupture conventionnelle is the agreed ending of a job, la rupture du contrat is a breach, and une rupture with no complement at all is a couple splitting up. English « rupture » can do none of that. It belongs to a burst appendix or to relations between two states; it is grave wherever it appears; and nobody says that a shop is in rupture or that a friend has had one. So the cognate is plainly visible and the difference of register is not, which is the arrangement that catches a reader out most reliably. Where French writes rupture, English needs break, break-up, breach or out of stock — and here, on a page about screen widths, breakpoint.
