Doing something
The verbs for what the hands do.
These are the verbs of the hands: putting, pulling, wiping, throwing, climbing. The very first one, poser, is worth holding on to because its commonest use is not in this list at all. Poser is to set something down gently: pose le sac sur la chaise. From there it goes to laying things that stay — poser du carrelage, to lay tiles — and to sitting still for a painter, poser pour un portrait. And then comes the one a learner meets on the first day: poser une question. French does not ask a question, it puts one down in front of you, and demander une question is simply wrong. The same goes for poser un problème, to raise a problem. Where English uses a verb of speaking, French uses a verb of placing.
