Garden and balcony

Sowing, watering, cutting back.

The list for a balcony as much as a garden. In it is ombragé, shaded, and English « shady » has a second life that French puts on a different word altogether. Un coin ombragé is a shaded corner and nothing more: no suspicion, no shiftiness. The English « a shady character » has no equivalent here — French says un individu louche for that. What does exist is ombrageux, one syllable longer, and it means neither shaded nor shifty: it describes somebody easily offended, and a horse that spooks — literally an animal that shies at its own shadow. So the two French adjectives from l’ombre split the work as shade and as touchiness, and the moral sense that English keeps in the same word is not in either of them.
