The last entry is la certification équitable, and its adjective is the kind of false friend that produces a phrase nobody would call wrong and nobody would ever write. Équitable is the ordinary French word for fair. It describes a sharing-out that treats people properly — un partage équitable, un procès équitable, une répartition équitable des quotas — and it is the word on the label this entry names, le commerce équitable. « Equitable » exists in English and covers only a corner of that ground. It has been pulled towards distribution and, above all, towards law: equity is a body of rules with remedies of its own, and « equitable relief » or « an equitable interest » are terms of art long before they are compliments. Nobody outside a courtroom says that a colleague was equitable. The plain word is « fair », the scheme on this page is « fair trade », two words that appear on every packet and never vary. So équitable comes out as « fair » nearly everywhere, and the cognate is the one rendering to leave alone.
