Walking, throwing, pulling, turning — a different word for each manner of doing it.
Halfway down the list sits ramper, glossed as to crawl, and the surprise is that English holds the older half of it. The verb is not Latin at all: it reached Old French from Frankish, from a verb about hooking the claws and drawing oneself up. So in Old French ramper meant to climb by gripping, and that is the sense English borrowed and never let go of. A lion « rampant » on a coat of arms is not crawling anywhere: it is reared up on its hind legs with its claws out, and from that picture « rampant » went on to mean spreading unchecked. The slope a trolley is pushed up arrived by the same road, because « ramp » is la rampe, the thing built for climbing — a noun French still uses for a banister and for the footlights at the front of a stage. Meanwhile the verb itself went downwards. Modern French ramper is what a baby does on the floor and what ivy does along a wall: le bébé rampe déjà très vite. One root, and the two languages kept opposite ends of it.
