Occupational medicine

What a workplace does to a body.

The twenty-third entry is la vaccination en entreprise, and the two small words at the end carry a rule worth having. French puts no article after en when the noun names a kind of place or a kind of situation rather than one particular instance. Travailler en entreprise, un stage en entreprise, une réparation en atelier, fabriqué en usine, être en réunion, en prison: in every one the bare noun is doing the work of an adjective, and slipping l’ in would be a mistake rather than a nuance. The moment a particular firm is meant the construction changes altogether, and French says dans l’entreprise où il travaille, with article and preposition both restored. So this entry does not describe a campaign at one company. It says that the vaccination happens at work, as against at a surgery or at a chemist’s, and that contrast is the whole content of the phrase. English has no such compression and must pick a phrase — « workplace vaccination », or « on site » on a poster. « In-house » is the tempting one and the wrong one, because it says who did the work rather than where it was done.
