What you need in order to talk about reasons, consequences and conditions.
A hundred and forty-eight words with nothing in common but their usefulness. One of them, le connaisseur, is a photograph of French as it was spelled before 1835. English borrowed the word in the eighteenth century and wrote it down as it stood: « connoisseur », with oi. Then the Académie’s dictionary of 1835 replaced that oi with ai across the whole family, because ai is what people were actually saying: connoître became connaître, paroître became paraître, and françois became français. English had no reform and kept the old picture, so the word is now correct in English and wrong in French — and connaisseur, which is the only French spelling, is a spelling mistake in English. The same freeze explains « reconnoitre », still with its oi beside French reconnaître.
