B1 · What follows a verb
The infinitive with à
The verbs of starting, learning and managing.
One group of verbs wants à in front of the infinitive, and it has a recognisable core: the verbs where something gets under way or runs towards a goal.
Starting and carrying on: commencer à, se mettre à, continuer à, recommencer à.
Learning and managing: apprendre à, s'habituer à, réussir à, arriver à, parvenir à, chercher à.
And hesitating and undertaking: hésiter à, renoncer à, s'engager à, tenir à, penser à. With aider and inviter the person comes first: il m'aide à porter. Notice how little English tells you about any of this — it starts to rain and he decided to leave look identical in English and take different prepositions here.

Die typisch deutsche Falle
Aufgepasst
English to is not French à, and this is the group where the resemblance does most damage. I want to go, I decided to go, I started to go and I stopped going all carry the same to or -ing in English; in French they take nothing, de, à and de. There is no way round it: the preposition belongs to the first verb and has to be learnt with it.
Whatever starts or succeeds takes à — and to is not à.
