Home and household
Rooms and furniture, the house and its parts, looking for and renting a flat, cleaning and repairs.
What holds these lists together
Home begins with the rooms and ends with the toolbox. In between are the words you need as soon as you look for a place of your own in the Netherlands or in Flanders: the narrow rijtjeshuis in its terrace, the steep trap, the huur and the borg, rent and deposit. Some furniture has names worth a second look: het bureau is simply a desk, and het kleed is a rug on the floor. And because almost everything in a house is a small thing, this is where you meet the diminutives in -tje and -je most often.
For example: het huis (house), de woning (home, dwelling), de makelaar (estate agent), klussen (to do odd jobs, to do DIY), verhuizen (to move (house))
