More about this list

Many Dutch houses are narrow and tall, with steep stairs: het rijtjeshuis, a terraced house, is the commonest type. A rented home is de huurwoning, the rent de huur. Watch out: de gang is the hall or corridor of a house, not a “gang”. The ground floor is de begane grond, which matches British “ground floor”; the first floor, de eerste verdieping, is the floor above it — as in Britain, not as in the United States.
