Every sentence comes from this course’s word lists or grammar topics. The verb form is highlighted, and the line below says which tense and person it is.
Ik zoek een kamer in de buurt van de universiteit.I am looking for a room near the university.
We zochten overal, maar de kat was weg.We searched everywhere, but the cat had gone.

Mistakes English speakers often make
WrongIk zoekte mijn sleutels en vond ze in de koelkast.
RightIk zocht mijn sleutels en vond ze in de koelkast.
zoeken is irregular, like English “seek, sought”: zoeken, zocht, gezocht. By ’t kofschip a regular verb on k would take -te, but this one does not: zoekte does not exist.
Common word combinations
ruzie zoeken— to look for trouble
niet ver te zoeken zijn— to be not far to look (of a reason)
zoeken naar iets— to search for something

The forms are calculated from the rules of the language — twice, in two independent ways — and checked against every hand-written form in this course. The example sentences are the course’s own.
