Verbs of saying

Who says a thing in what way — and what the verb claims alongside it.

Near the end of the list stands proferir, and it is the entry most likely to be handed to the wrong English word. Não proferiu uma única palavra means that he did not utter a single word, and « to utter » is the whole of it. The word an English reader reaches for instead is « to proffer », because it sits one letter away and looks like a loan. It is a loan, but from somewhere else. « To proffer » is to hold something out towards somebody: a hand, a cup, an apology. « She proffered an explanation » describes something held out and possibly refused, which is not what proferir describes at all. The two are unrelated. Proferir comes from proferre, to carry forward, and what it carries forward is always something said. « To proffer » arrived through French from offerre, to offer, with pro set in front of it, and what it offers is always something given. A last warning, because it cuts both ways: « to utter » is not everyday English either. It is formal and lives above all in the negative, which is exactly where proferir is most at home.
