The thirty-fourth entry is a análise cega, which English renders word for word as « a blind analysis » — and then goes on using that adjective in a dozen places where nothing whatever is wrong with anybody’s eyes. « A blind date » is an evening with somebody not yet met. « A blind alley » is a line of enquiry that leads nowhere. « A blind spot » is the piece of road the mirror hides and, of a person, the subject they cannot think straight about. « To turn a blind eye » is to see perfectly well and decide not to have seen. « To fly blind » is to carry on without instruments. Running under all of them is one idea, and it is exactly the one this list needs: information withheld, not sight lost. That is what the sentence on this page describes — the answer is kept from the people doing the work until the work is finished, so that hope cannot steer the choices. Portuguese has built none of this on cego. It says às cegas, sem saída, o ângulo morto, and changes construction every time.
