Foundations and charitable purpose

Money that belongs to a purpose and not to a person.

The nineteenth entry is o efeito alcançado, and a reader arriving from English should notice how much narrower the English words are. O efeito is simply the effect, whatever followed from what was done, and one noun covers the lot. Charitable English has broken that single idea into a ladder and expects each rung to be named exactly. « Output » is what the organisation produced and can count without asking anybody: meals served, hours taught, reports published. « Outcome » is the change in the people the work was for — they read better, they stayed housed — and it has to be observed rather than tallied. « Impact » is the part of that change which would not have happened anyway, and it is the hardest claim on the ladder, because making it means knowing what would have occurred without the money. A funder who asks for outcomes and is handed outputs has been answered on the wrong rung, and the answer usually looks impressive, which is exactly why the mistake survives. O efeito alcançado covers the whole ladder at once, so the English word has to be chosen by what is really being claimed.
