Lexicography

The fourteenth entry is o neologismo, and the two languages do not build new words by the same means, which changes what a dictionary has to print. English has conversion: a noun becomes a verb without a single letter moving. « Google », « text », « friend », « host » and « stream » all did it, and the page simply gains a second part of speech under the headword that was already there. Portuguese cannot work that way, because a verb has to belong to a conjugation before it can be used at all. The borrowed stem takes an ending first — almost always -ar — and only then can it be inflected: clicar, formatar, tuitar. Two things follow for the entries standing around this one. A Portuguese dictionary has to open a fresh lemma for the verb, so new words are countable here in a way they are not in English. And a lematização, further down the same list, costs the reader less than might be feared: the ending that makes the word usable is also the ending that makes it findable.
