The eighth entry is a adaptação do ambiente, and the second noun is the one an English reader will recognise and misplace. O ambiente is the surroundings themselves — the flat, the doorway, the height of the bed — and in other sentences the natural world, as in a proteção do ambiente. The English cognate has kept none of that ground. « Ambience » names an atmosphere and nothing more: the ambience of a restaurant, of a waiting room, of an evening. « Ambient » survives only as an adjective, and only in narrow company — ambient temperature, ambient light, ambient music — where it means whatever level happens to be there in the background. Neither word can be adapted, because neither of them is a place. So a adaptação do ambiente is environmental adaptation, or, closer to the way a report would put it, a home adaptation: a grab rail, a ramp, a light switch moved lower, a doorway widened. Write « ambience » there and the sentence quietly promises softer lighting instead of a bathroom somebody can actually use.
