Endocrinology

Messengers, feedback loops, and what happens when one of them tips over.

The seventeenth entry is a reposição de corticoides, and the noun in the middle of it is a false friend of the quiet kind — the sentence still reads, it simply says something else. A reposição is the putting back of what has gone missing: stock on a shelf, fluid in a system, a hormone the body has stopped making. English has one word for all of that, « replacement », and in the clinic it is the fixed term: steroid replacement, thyroid hormone replacement, hormone replacement therapy, which everybody shortens to HRT. The lookalike « reposition » exists and is not a synonym. It means to move a thing to a different place — repositioning a patient in bed, repositioning a catheter, repositioning a brand — and nothing is restored by it. So « corticosteroid reposition » would describe shifting the drug about, which is not a treatment. Note too that an entry further down, a substituição hormonal, lands on that same English word: « hormone replacement », not « hormonal substitution ». Two Portuguese nouns, one English one, and the nearest-looking form is wrong for both.
