Making a point and dodging one

What somebody does with a statement instead of merely saying it.

The twenty-first entry is abreviar, and English has three verbs where Portuguese has one. They are sorted not by how much is taken out but by what kind of thing is being cut. « To abbreviate » belongs to writing that stands in for something longer: a word, a title, a name. « Dr » abbreviates « doctor », and a form asks for an abbreviated address. Nothing has gone from the meaning, only from the spelling, and the reader is expected to put it back. « To abridge » belongs to whole works and to nothing else: an abridged edition of a novel, an abridged dictionary, the abridged version of a report. Material really has gone, an editor chose which, and the title page has to say so. That is the verb this entry needs, because A editora abreviou o romance para a edição escolar describes an abridged edition exactly. And « to shorten » is the plain word for everything else — a speech, a queue, a route. A reader who makes « abbreviate » the general translation will produce abbreviated novels, which in English means novels reduced to their initials.
