Fire protection in buildings
What a building must achieve on its own, before anybody calls the fire brigade.
The seventeenth entry is o ponto de reunião, and the sign an English reader will actually meet at the far side of the car park says « assembly point ». That is the modern wording and it is deliberately plain. The older word for the same act is « muster », and it is worth knowing because it has not died out — it has moved sideways. At sea and in the services it is still perfectly literal: a « muster station » is exactly what this entry names, a « muster list » says who goes where, and « to muster » is to bring people together and count them. Ashore it has become almost entirely figurative. Anything that « passes muster » is good enough to survive inspection, and the picture behind the phrase is a line of people being looked over one by one. Somebody who « musters the courage » gathers it as an officer gathers a company. One idea now lives in two registers, the literal one aboard ship and the figurative one everywhere else. A reunião carries none of that: it is the ordinary Portuguese word for a meeting, and this sign is asking for bodies, not for an agenda.
