Walking, throwing, pulling, turning — a different word for each kind.
The twenty-third entry is lançar, and the English word descended from it has gone up in the world. Both come from lancea, the Latin spear, by way of the late verb lanceare, to wield a lance. Portuguese kept the verb whole and ordinary: Lançou o casaco para cima da cama is a jacket thrown on a bed and nothing grander, and lançar serves for a stone, a ball and a remark. English borrowed the same verb through French and let it climb. « To launch » is what you do to a ship, then to a rocket, then to a career or a range of shoes, and the hand that once threw a spear is nowhere in it any more. The noun travelled separately and stayed nearer the beginning: « a lance » is the weapon itself, and « a lancet » is the small blade named after it. Three words, one shaft of wood. The rule of thumb is short. On this page lançar asks for « throw » or « chuck » in almost every sentence, and for « launch » only where something is being set going.
