Offices and papers
Registering, the identity card, the application, the appointment.
The list opens with a repartição, and it looks like a piece of administrative vocabulary an English reader has to learn from nothing. It is not. The noun sits straight on the verb repartir, to divide something up and share it out, and its first job is that act and not any building: a repartição dos bens is the dividing of an estate between heirs, and a repartição das despesas the splitting of a bill. The office behind the counter is that same word turned on the administration itself — a ministry cut into parts, and one of those parts is where the form is handed over. Now look at the sign English hangs above the identical door. « Department » reached us through French from departir, to divide, and « division » says the thing outright without even a disguise. Two languages, with no borrowing between them, named a public office after the same gesture: something whole was cut, and this is one of the pieces. So A repartição abre às nove can be read as « the department opens at nine » with nothing at all lost in the crossing.
