Near the end of the list stands o direito de citação, and translating it word for word produces the wrong right. Portuguese has one noun here, a citação, and it carries two things that English keeps firmly apart. The first is the borrowed passage itself, the sentence lifted out of somebody else’s page: that is « a quotation ». The second is the reference that says where the passage came from — author, title, year, page — and that is « a citation ». The verbs split with them. To « quote » is to reproduce the words; to « cite » is to name the source; and a scholar who cites a book without quoting it has copied nothing at all. The right on this list is plainly the first of the two, since what the law allows is a short passage to be reproduced, so it is « the right of quotation », and « the right of citation » would name a right to mention titles, which nobody needs. Portuguese then adds a third job that English never gives the word: a citação do réu is a summons, the paper that calls a defendant to court.
