Structural steelwork

The twenty-fourth entry is l’ordine di montaggio, and the second noun is one Italian word doing the work of four English ones. Il montaggio is the putting together of a thing out of its parts, whatever the parts happen to be. In the shop that is assembly; out on site, for steelwork, English insists on a different word altogether and calls it erection, so l’ordine di montaggio is the erection sequence and nothing else. Write « assembly sequence » on a drawing and you will be understood, and you will also be heard translating. In a cutting room the same montaggio is the editing of a film and il montatore is the editor, a job with no metal in it at all. English did borrow the word, but only that last sense and only by way of French: « a montage » is a run of short shots, never the bolting up of a frame. The verb underneath, montare, is what English took as « to mount », and that borrowing kept the climbing and the fixing while the building stayed behind. The common thread stays visible in Italian and disappears in English: something is being put up.
