The thirty-seventh entry is la rieducazione funzionale, and it is the one line on this list that an English reader can render word for word and get badly wrong. Rieducare is a neutral clinical verb: it means to teach a function to work again, and la rieducazione is the ordinary name over the door of a physiotherapy department. La rieducazione del ginocchio, la rieducazione motoria, la rieducazione posturale — nobody hears anything political in any of the three. « Re-education » exists in English and has been pulled almost entirely into politics: it belongs to camps and regimes and the forcible remaking of what somebody thinks, so a clinic advertising « knee re-education » would read as a joke or as a threat. The English for all of the above is « rehabilitation », shortened to « rehab » in speech, or « physiotherapy » for the discipline itself. Keep la riabilitazione beside it, which covers the same broad ground in Italian, and keep la rieducazione for the retraining of one named function — a knee, a gait, a shoulder.
