Earthquake-resistant building
A structure that is allowed to move so that it stays standing.
The last entry of this list is il sopralluogo dopo il sisma, and the first noun is the one English cannot match with a single word. Il sopralluogo is put together from sopra, over, and il luogo, the place: the act of going onto the place and looking at it with your own eyes, whatever the place happens to be. The same noun serves the officer who attends a crime scene, the surveyor who goes out to a building, the fire brigade after a fire, the film crew choosing where to shoot, and the engineer of this page walking round a damaged block. English changes its word with the trade and never keeps the idea: « a site visit » for the surveyor, « a scene examination » for the officer, « a recce » for the film crew, « an inspection » for the engineer. The verb behaves the same way — fare un sopralluogo, effettuare un sopralluogo — where English has to say who is going and why. Learn one of those four and you have learnt a trade, not the Italian noun.
