Entry thirty-seven is la boa derivante, and an English reader who glances at it will see « boa » and think of a snake. Italian keeps the two apart, but not by spelling: la boa, feminine, is the floating mark anchored in the water, while il boa, masculine, is the constrictor and also the feather stole named after it. Same three letters, same sound, and the article does the entire job. This is a device English simply does not have. Where Italian lets gender split one written form in two, English has to reach for separate nouns — « buoy » and « boa » — or let the surrounding words decide. The habit is worth acquiring early, because Italian works the same way elsewhere: il capitale is money and la capitale is a city; il fronte is a battle line and la fronte is a forehead. So when a word looks familiar, read the article before the noun. In la boa derivante that single la is what tells you a research programme is tracking a float across the ocean, and not releasing a snake into it.
