The eighth entry is l’abbuono di piega, and the first noun is worth rather more than the one workshop job it does here. L’abbuono is built on buono, good, and it names anything granted in your favour, written down on your side of the account. On an invoice it is the sum knocked off — un abbuono sul prezzo is a rebate, and abbuonare is to let somebody off a payment or a fault. In cycling it is the handful of seconds taken off a rider’s time at a stage finish: dieci secondi di abbuono is ordinary Giro commentary, and nobody hears anything technical in it. And on a bent part it is the correction that brings the developed length back to size, which is the sense this list needs. English has to change word at every step — « rebate » on the invoice, « bonus » at the finish line, « allowance » on the drawing — and the three have nothing to do with one another. Italian keeps one idea and lets the trade decide what it is worth.
