The ninth entry is il telaino, the small wooden rectangle the bees build their comb inside, and the diminutive ending hides the more useful word. Strip it off and il telaio is left, which in Italian is one thing seen four ways while English reaches for four nouns that share no ancestry. Il telaio is the weaver’s loom, the oldest of them, holding the warp threads under tension. It is the frame of a window or a door, what a joiner fits into a wall, and equally the frame of a bicycle, the tubes everything else is bolted to. It is the chassis of a car, the structure carrying the body. And it is the hoop an embroiderer stretches her cloth over. Loom, frame, chassis, hoop: an English reader has to learn each pairing on its own, because nothing links the four words to one another. Italian asks a single question instead — what is holding this thing taut and square — and answers it once, for every size. The beekeeper’s telaino is the smallest member of that family, and ogni telaino si estrae con calma describes a frame under tension exactly like the rest.
