What holds these lists together

Three institutions everybody deals with, and lists in which the word is the smaller problem. A term such as la scuola media, il debito formativo or il decreto legge can be translated without anybody understanding what it refers to, because the thing behind it has no exact counterpart in Britain. Il decreto legge, for instance, is a government decree that takes effect at once and lapses from the start unless parliament converts it into law within sixty days. That is why many entries here carry a sentence on what the word stands for in Italy, not just a translation.
