Camping and the motorhome

Near the top of the list is la tenda interna, and the noun inside it is one an English reader already owns without knowing what it says. La tenda and « tent » are the same word, from Latin tendere, to stretch, by way of the participle tenta, the thing stretched — which is precisely what a tent is, and precisely what it stops being the moment the fabric goes slack. In Italian that family is still audible on the campsite. Tendere is the ordinary verb for pulling something taut, and this list uses it three entries later: tendi bene il tirante della tenda, pull the guy line properly. Il tirante is itself built on tirare, to pull, so the rope is named after the one job it has. « Tent » in English stands alone, because its relatives all arrived later, by the learned road, and stayed abstract — « tension », « tense », « extend », « intend », « tendon ». Only the last of those is something you could put a hand on. The picture is there in English too; it simply never comes within sight of a field.
