Mistakes English speakers often make

  • Wrong Mijn horloge is vannacht gebleven staan.

Right Mijn horloge is vannacht blijven staan.

blijven with an infinitive keeps the infinitive and does not turn into a participle: blijven staan, blijven liggen, blijven praten. English “stopped” or “stayed standing” hides this.

Common word combinations

  • blijven zitten — to stay put, to stay seated (also in school: to repeat a year)
  • op de hoogte blijven — to keep up to date
  • rustig blijven — to stay calm
