Company valuation

The twelfth entry is orizzonte di piano, and the word an English reader thinks he recognises is the one that is not there. In Italian the instrument is il pianoforte, at full length, and il piano is left free for other work — four separate jobs that English hands to four separate words. It is a plan, which is the sense here: il piano aziendale, il piano di investimenti, and the horizon of this entry, the last year the plan is written out for before a formula takes over. It is a storey, abito al terzo piano, and that is how anybody renting a flat meets the word first. It is a flat surface, and from the noun an adjective, un terreno piano, level ground. And it is the adverb heard on the first morning of any visit: parla piano, speak quietly, vai piano, go slowly, piano piano, little by little. The keyboard is the one job it never does.
