The hotel from the inside
Occupancy, the room rate and the night on which the books are closed.
The one plain verb on this list is verbalizzare, and it is the entry an English reader translates wrongly with the most confidence. Il verbale is the written record: the minutes of a meeting, the report an officer writes at the roadside, the sheet on which a university examiner enters a mark — verbalizzare un esame is what the examiner does when the mark finally goes into the register. Verbalizzare is therefore the act of getting something into the record, so il turno di notte verbalizza ogni reclamo says that the night shift writes every complaint into the log. « To verbalise » does a different job altogether. It means to get a feeling or a thought into words at all, and it carries a faint smell of the consulting room; nothing is committed to paper. English has no verb of its own here and presses a noun into service instead — « to minute », « to log », « to record ». So « the team verbalised its concerns » rendered as il team ha verbalizzato le sue preoccupazioni files those concerns in the minutes instead.
