Sixteenth on the list is sopravvivere, and the gloss « to survive » is exact while the grammar around it is not. In English the verb takes its object bare: you survive a war, a winter, a crash, and nothing stands between the verb and the noun. Italian treats it instead as an intransitive verb of remaining, so the thing survived has to be reached through a preposition. The list’s own sentence shows it — poche copie sono sopravvissute alla guerra — where alla is a plus the article, and leaving it out gives a sentence no Italian speaker would produce. The preposition then drags a second rule behind it. Because the verb has no direct object, its compound tenses are built with essere and never with avere, and a participle standing after essere agrees with the subject: sono sopravvissute for the copies, è sopravvissuto for a single manuscript. One small word therefore settles two things at once, and the habit worth building is to hear a as a part of the verb rather than as something added to it.
