B1  ·  What follows a verb

Adjective and noun before an infinitive

« Easy to read » and « it is easy to read » are two constructions here.

After an adjective the infinitive usually takes di: contento di, fiero di, capace di, sicuro di. A few take a: pronto a, abituato a, disposto a.

And Italian has a third preposition here: da. It stands when the thing itself is the subject and « to be done » is meant: Questo testo è facile da leggere, una cosa da fare. English uses « to » for this as well, which is why the two constructions look identical from the outside.

Impersonally, with è, the infinitive stands bare: È facile leggere questo testo. So « this text is easy to read » and « it is easy to read this text » — the same words in English — need da in the first and nothing at all in the second.

Nouns take di: la voglia di, il tempo di, la paura di. With da the sense is « to be done »: qualcosa da bere, niente da fare.

Aufgepasst

English has one word, « to », for both halves of this, so the two constructions are invisible until they have to be built. « This word is hard to pronounce » puts the word itself in the subject slot and needs da: questa parola è difficile da pronunciare. « It is hard to pronounce this word » has an empty subject and needs nothing at all: è difficile pronunciare questa parola.

Falsch:È facile da sbagliare.
Richtig:È facile sbagliare.

The thing as subject takes da; after è, nothing.
