The reporting verbs
And « pretendere » is not « to pretend ».
Reporting everything with dire che loses the judgement: whether somebody claimed, admitted, denied or merely mentioned. The reporting verb carries it.
With che and the indicative stand the verbs of stating: affermare, ammettere, aggiungere, precisare, riconoscere.
With che and the <b>congiuntivo</b> stand the verbs of believing, doubting and wanting: credere, pensare, dubitare, volere, pretendere. English changes nothing after any of these, so the mood has to be decided from the verb rather than heard in it.
With di plus the infinitive stand the verbs where speaker and actor are the same person: promettere, rifiutare, accettare, negare.

affermare and riconoscere take the indicative.
Ha riconosciuto che si era sbagliata.She acknowledged that she had been wrong.
negare and ammettere usually take di plus the infinitive.
Nega di aver visto qualcosa.He denies having seen anything.
pretendere means to demand, not to claim — and it takes the congiuntivo.
Pretende che la risposta sia scritta.He demands that the answer be in writing.

Pretendere is a false friend and a costly one. It does not mean « to pretend » and it does not mean « to claim »: it means <b>to demand</b>. Pretende che tu venga is « he insists that you come ». English « to pretend » is fingere, and « to claim » is sostenere — three verbs where the ear expects one.
