Joins instead of se
Five of them, and only one takes the indicative.
Se is the neutral condition. To say that it is <b>necessary</b>, use a patto che or a condizione che: Vengo, a patto che tu ci sia. Congiuntivo.
A meno che non is the exception — « unless » — with a non that is not a negation: a meno che non piova. Tranne se says the same with the indicative and is the spoken form.
Nel caso in cui and caso mai are the precaution — « in case » —: Prendi l'ombrello, caso mai piovesse. English uses a plain present here, « in case it rains », and Italian uses the congiuntivo.
Purché is the condition as a proviso — « as long as », « provided that » — and takes the congiuntivo as well. In caso di plus a noun needs no verb at all.

The non after a meno che negates nothing. A meno che non piova is « unless it rains », not « unless it does not rain ». Leaving it out is understood and sounds foreign; reading it as a negation turns the sentence upside down. English « unless » is the model: it too swallows a negative that is never said twice.
Without se the condition takes the congiuntivo; only tranne se does not.
