More about this list

A woman teacher is de lerares, or in primary school de juf; a man is de leraar or, in primary school, de meester. Whoever studies at de universiteit is a student; de hogeschool is a university of applied sciences without the right to award doctorates. Watch leren: it means “to learn”, and in everyday speech also “to teach” — Zij leert ons Nederlands is “she is teaching us Dutch”. English keeps two verbs; Dutch often needs the context to tell them apart. In Flanders de juf is also used for a woman teacher, and het jaar names the class of a school year.
