Body and health
The body, looking after yourself, being ill and seeing a doctor, and what to say in an emergency.
What holds these lists together
Where it hurts, Dutch says much as English does: Ik heb hoofdpijn., “I have a headache”; Mijn rug doet pijn., “my back hurts”. If you are ill you go to the huisarts first, the GP, and you collect medicine from the apotheek; plasters and toothpaste come from the drogist, which is not a pharmacy. A trap is waiting here too: if you are misselijk you feel sick, not miserable. The lists go from the body through the bathroom to the surgery and the emergency number — so that you are not searching for words when it matters.
For example: het lichaam (body), douchen (to shower), de huisarts (the GP, the family doctor), het alarmnummer (emergency number)
