أخطاء شائعة عند المتحدثين بالعربية

خطأ He told that he was coming.
صواب He said that he was coming.
في العربية «قال إنه قادم» و«أخبرني أنه قادم»، وكلاهما مع «إنّ». أما tell فتحتاج مفعولا بشريا مباشرا: tell me، وبدونه نستعمل say.
خطأ Tell to me where you were.
صواب Tell me where you were.
نقول بالعربية «قل لي الحقيقة» بحرف اللام، ينقله الناطق إلى to. لكن tell يأخذ الشخص مباشرة دون حرف جر.

فخ شائع

خطأ He said me that the meeting was cancelled.

صواب He told me that the meeting was cancelled.

العربية تقول «قال لي» بحرف الجر، فيكتب المتعلم He said me مرة، وHe told that مرة، وكلتاهما خطأ. القاعدة شكلية محضة: tell مع الشخص، وsay بلا شخص، أو say to مع حرف الجر. وإن ساورك الشك فاختر tell متبوعًا بالشخص.

أفعال يسهل الخلط بينها

say say يركّز على الكلام نفسه، وtell على من يسمعه: say hello وtell him.
