할머니의 생신
A family gathering for a grandmother’s eightieth birthday.
Honorifics. When Koreans speak about an older person, the words themselves change: 생일 becomes 생신, 먹다 becomes 드시다, 있다 becomes 계시다. Watch for the -시- that appears in the verbs.
이번 주말은 할머니의 여든 번째 생신이에요. 그래서 우리 가족은 모두 할머니 댁에 갔어요.
할머니 댁은 서울에서 기차로 세 시간쯤 걸려요. 동생은 기차 안에서 잤어요.
도착하니까 삼촌과 고모도 벌써 와 계셨어요. 엄마와 고모는 부엌에서 음식을 준비하셨어요. 저는 상을 차렸어요.
저녁에 우리는 케이크에 초를 켜고 다 같이 노래를 불러 드렸어요. 할머니께서 아주 기뻐하셨어요.
할머니께서 말씀하셨어요. "이렇게 다 같이 오니까 정말 좋다." 그날 밤 우리는 늦게까지 이야기를 나눴어요.
